Ingredients Notes and Substitutions

  • French Bread: Use approximately 1-1/2 loaves of French bread for the best texture and flavor. If French bread is unavailable, you can substitute with other types of bread such as brioche or challah, but keep in mind that it may alter the texture slightly.
  • Milk and Heavy Cream: The combination of milk and heavy cream creates a rich and creamy custard base. If you prefer a lighter version, you can use all milk or substitute heavy cream with half-and-half. Alternatively, for a dairy-free option, coconut milk or almond milk can be used as substitutes.
  • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract enhances the flavor of the bread pudding with its warm and aromatic notes. For a stronger vanilla flavor, you can use vanilla bean paste (which is my personal preference).
  • Vanilla Cream Sauce Ingredients: For the creamy vanilla sauce, heavy cream, flour, sugar, butter, and vanilla extract are combined. If you’re lactose intolerant or prefer a dairy-free option, you can use coconut cream or a non-dairy milk alternative like full fat coconut milk. We’ve also tried a couple of DF creamers that we really love.
