Notes Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Ground Beef: You can use lean ground beef to reduce the fat content. Ground turkey or chicken are great alternatives if you prefer a lighter option.
  • Onion: Yellow or white onions are recommended, but you can use shallots for a slightly different flavor profile. If you prefer, onion powder can be used in place of fresh onions.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic cloves provide the best flavor, but garlic powder can be used in a pinch. Use 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder for every clove of garlic.
  • Beef Broth: For a richer taste, use low-sodium beef broth. Chicken or vegetable broth can be substituted if needed.
  • Sour Cream: Full-fat sour cream gives the sauce its creamy texture, but you can use light sour cream or Greek yogurt for a healthier twist.
  • Dijon Mustard: Adds a subtle tangy flavor. If you don’t have Dijon mustard, regular yellow mustard or a dash of Worcestershire sauce can be used.
  • Flour: Used to thicken the sauce. For a gluten-free option, use cornstarch or a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Egg Noodles: Traditional egg noodles are what we recommend for this dish , but any pasta can be used as a base. Whole wheat or gluten-free noodles are great healthful alternatives.
  • Butter: Adds richness and flavor to the dish.

Variations

  • Chicken Stroganoff: Substitute the ground beef with diced chicken breasts or thighs for a lighter alternative.
  • Vegetarian Stroganoff: Replace the ground beef with lentils, chickpeas, or a plant-based ground meat substitute. Add more vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, or spinach for extra nutrition.
  • Turkey Stroganoff: Use ground turkey instead of beef for a leaner protein option. The flavors will still blend beautifully with the creamy sauce.
  • Spicy Stroganoff: Add a kick of heat by incorporating a pinch of red pepper flakes or a splash of hot sauce. You can also use spicy ground sausage in place of beef.
  • Gluten-Free Stroganoff: Use gluten-free pasta or rice instead of egg noodles. Ensure the broth and other ingredients are gluten-free as well.
  • Cheesy Stroganoff: Stir in a handful of shredded cheese, like cheddar or parmesan, for an extra creamy and cheesy twist on the classic stroganoff.

Tips for Success

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh garlic, onions, and mushrooms will enhance the flavor of your stroganoff. If possible, opt for high-quality beef and fresh herbs.
  • Deglaze the Pan: After browning the beef and mushrooms, deglaze the pan with a splash of beef broth to lift up the flavorful bits stuck to the bottom. This adds depth to the sauce.
  • Simmer Gently: When adding the sour cream, reduce the heat to low and simmer gently to prevent curdling. Stir continuously for a smooth, creamy sauce.
  • Season Gradually: Season with salt and pepper gradually throughout the cooking process. Taste as you go to ensure a well-balanced flavor.
  • Cook Noodles Separately: For best results, cook the egg noodles or pasta separately and toss them with the sauce just before serving to prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Adjust to Taste: Feel free to adjust the seasonings, such as adding more mustard for tanginess or extra herbs for freshness. Customize the recipe to suit your taste.
  • Reheat Gently: If reheating leftovers, do so gently over low heat to maintain the creamy texture of the sauce. Add a splash of broth or water if needed to loosen the sauce.
  • Garnish for Presentation: Finish your dish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and added flavor. A dollop of sour cream on top can also enhance presentation and taste.
