BBQ Chicken Cheesesteak

I’ve never made a top 10 food list. But if I ever were to do so, the traditional philly cheesesteak would make that list. That’s saying something considering I’ve probably only had 10 of them ever in my lifetime. They are just so stinking good. I never realized what made a traditional cheesesteak so good until recently. MAYONNAISE (I was also this many days old when I realized mayonnaise is spelled with two n’s). Seriously though, mayonnaise.

BBQ Chicken Cheesesteak Ingredients:

  • 1 lb  chicken breast (freeze for 30-40 minutes)
  • 1 large onion
  • 12 slices provolone cheese
  • BBQ sauce
  • Honey
  • Mayonnaise
  • Hoagie rolls

Ok, mayonnaise isn’t the only thing that makes a cheesesteak an original philly cheesesteak, but it adds a layer of creaminess that I didn’t appreciate until I had one without mayonnaise. The other components of a traditional cheesesteak are carmelized grilled onions, thin slices of meat, and provolone cheese.

BBQ Chicken Cheesesteak Instructions:

  1. Remove chicken from freezer after 30-40 minutes. This allows chicken to be easier cut
  2. Cut chicken as thin as you can into strips
  3. Heat a pan over medium heat, add butter to pan, add diced or sliced onions stirring occasionally until onions are browned, translucent, and sweet. Remove onions
  4. Add chicken until just cooked through. Add salt, pepper, bbq sauce, and honey to taste and continue to cook until slightly blackened. Remove chicken, mix with onions
  5. Butter hoagie rolls and toast. Add chicken and onions, to rolls, top with provolone cheese and mayonnaise
  6. EAT UP!

Green peppers? FAKE NEWS! Mushrooms? Get out of here! Thin meat, caramelized onions (typically diced but I like mine in longer strips as pictured), mayo, and a beautifully buttered and toasted hoagie roll! That’s what constitutes a real-deal cheesesteak. Usually it’s ribeye meat, but a local deli here makes a chicken version and I love it so much that I wanted to share it with you all! Enjoy!
