Ingredients & Substitutions
You only need a handful of pantry staples to make classic Muddy Buddies.
Rice Chex cereal: The classic choice because it stays crisp and catches all that chocolate coating. Corn Chex works too, or use a mix of both.
Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Semi-sweet keeps the snack from being overly sugary. Milk chocolate makes it sweeter and softer, while dark chocolate gives it a richer flavor.
Creamy peanut butter: Smooth peanut butter coats the cereal best. Avoid natural peanut butter that separates, since it can make the mixture oily.
Butter: Helps the chocolate mixture melt into a glossy, silky coating. But you can easily make this recipe dairy free by replacing the butter with equal parts peanut butter or coconut oil.
Vanilla extract: A little splash makes the chocolate-peanut-butter flavor taste warmer and more homemade.
Powdered sugar: The snowy, sweet coating that makes Muddy Buddies what they are.
Tips for Success
- Use fresh cereal for the best crunch. Stale cereal will still technically work, but it won’t have that addictive snap.
- Don’t overheat the chocolate mixture. Microwave in short intervals and stir often so the chocolate stays smooth instead of seizing.
- Shake in batches if needed. If your bag or container is too full, the powdered sugar won’t coat evenly.
Freeze them. Seriously. Muddy Buddies straight from the freezer are chef’s kiss. The chocolate-peanut-butter coating gets extra snappy, the powdered sugar stays perfectly powdery, and every handful tastes cold, crunchy, and completely addictive. I promise, you’ll never go back to room temp muddy buddies ever again!
Classic Muddy Buddies
These Muddy Buddies are crunchy, chocolatey, peanut buttery, and coated in just enough powdered sugar to keep those perfect little puppy chow clusters intact. A quick no-bake snack mix that’s kid-friendly, freezer-friendly, and dangerously easy to grab by the handful.
Ingredients
- 9 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ¾ cup creamy peanut butter
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
Instructions
Add the Rice Chex cereal to a very large mixing bowl and set aside.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until melted and smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the chocolate-peanut-butter mixture over the Chex cereal. Gently fold with a rubber spatula until the cereal is coated.
- Transfer the coated cereal to a large zip-top bag or container with a lid. Add the powdered sugar.
- Shake gently until coated. For bigger, chocolatey clusters, don’t over-shake — a shorter, gentler shake helps the pieces stay clumped together.
- Spread onto parchment paper to cool and set.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature, in the fridge, or in the freezer.
Notes
For extra-chocolatey puppy chow clusters, try using a little less powdered sugar and a gentler shake so the pieces don’t all separate.
Freezer tip: Muddy Buddies are absolute perfection straight from the freezer. The chocolate-peanut-butter coating gets cold and snappy, the powdered sugar stays powdery, and the crunch is chef’s kiss. No thawing required.
