Ingredients List: What Goes Into Dairy-Free Crumbl Cookies
Here’s a breakdown of the crucial components:
Cookie Base:
- Peanut Butter: The foundational ingredient of this recipe, peanut butter provides that nutty, creamy texture and rich flavor that defines Muddy Buddy cookies. Its natural oils contribute to the cookies’ moistness and chewiness.
- Eggs: Eggs serve as a binding agent, holding the cookie together while lending structure and stability to the dough. They play a crucial role in achieving that perfect chewy cookie consistency.
- White Sugar: Sugar not only sweetens the cookies but also aids in achieving that delightful balance between chewiness and crispness. It contributes to the cookies’ golden-brown exterior.
- Vanilla Extract: optional, but adds a delicious depth and enhancement of flavor.
Chocolate Ganache:
Dairy-Free Chocolate Chips: There are so many great readily available options online and in grocery stores these days for dairy free and vegan chocolate chips. Whenever possible, my preference for budget and taste are the Wegman’s brand Semi-Sweet Mini Chocolate Chips.
Here are a couple of other great options (most of these are in stores, but I’m linking to Amazon listings just in case that works better for you):
- Ghirardelli Non-Dairy Dark Chocolate Chips
- Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- 365 by Whole Food Markets Dark Chocolate Baking Chunks
- Lieber’s Vegan Real Chocolate Chips
Non-Dairy Cream: The non-dairy cream replaces traditional heavy cream to create a luscious ganache. It adds a creamy texture without the dairy component, making it suitable for those with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies.
Sometimes we use canned coconut cream for this. But my preference is to use a plant-based heavy whipping cream like Califia Farms or Country Crock.
Muddy Buddy Topping:
The Muddy Buddy topping, which includes ingredients like cereal, chocolate, and peanut butter powder, can be prepared using our Classic Muddy Buddies recipe.

Crumbl Cookies is a popular chain of gourmet cookie stores known for its delicious and oversized, chewy cookies in a variety of flavors. These delicious cookies have gained immense popularity for several reasons and are absolutely worth a try if you have a Crumbl Bakery in your area! Here are few reasons we love them so much:

What are Some Popular Crumbl Cookie Flavors?
There are so many great flavors on Crumbl’s menu! I’d love to add more copycat recipes to this blog, especially as we find ways to make dairy free and gluten free alternative recipes. Here are some of the most popular flavors made by Crumbl (underlining the ones I hope to make soon for Keat’s Eats!):
- Chocolate Chip Cookie: A classic favorite, Crumbl’s chocolate chip cookies are known for their gooey milk chocolate chips and soft texture.
- Chilled Sugar: These giant sugar cookies have a delightful buttercream frosting that’s chilled, offering a refreshing twist on a classic sugar cookie. My husband votes Cumbl Sugar Cookies as the BEST cookies of all time!
- Muddy Buddy: Inspired by the beloved snack mix, Muddy Buddy cookies feature a peanut butter cookie base, chocolate ganache, and a Muddy Buddy topping of powdered sugar and cocoa.

- Red Velvet White Chip: Red velvet fans will appreciate these cookies with white chocolate chips, offering a delightful combination of flavors and textures.
3-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies
I used the popular 3-ingredient peanut butter cookies recipe as the base of my recipe for these copycat Crumbl cookies. I used this base for lots of reasons, not the least of which is that these cookies are easily made gluten free and dairy free and adaptable for other dietary restrictions.
Here are a few more reasons to love this 3-ingredient cookie base:
- Simple Ingredients: I love that the only ingredients called for in this recipe are ingredients I always have on hand.
- Quick Preparation: The preparation process is speedy and straightforward. Mixing the ingredients takes only a few minutes, and the cookies typically bake in around 10-12 minutes. You can satisfy your cookie cravings in a snap.
- Minimal Cleanup: With fewer ingredients, there are fewer bowls and utensils to wash after baking. This makes 3-ingredient peanut butter cookies an ideal choice for minimal cleanup and less kitchen fuss.
- Classic Flavor: Despite their simplicity, these cookies have a classic and nostalgic flavor. The rich, nutty taste of peanut butter combined with the sweetness of sugar creates a delightful balance that many people find irresistible.
- Chewy Texture: When baked correctly, these cookies have a soft and chewy texture with slightly crisp edges. The combination of peanut butter and sugar contributes to their delightful consistency.
Vegan Options
The only non-vegan ingredient in this recipe is the egg. For best results, I don’t recommend using flax eggs to make vegan cookies. It changes the texture too much. You could get by using a commercially made egg substitute.
Or, if you’d rather, here’s a popular vegan version of 3-ingredients peanut butter cookies that can be used as the base of the cookie:
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
Bake at 375ºF for 10-12 minutes.
Can I Freeze These Cookies for Later?
Yep! Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to freeze Muddy Buddy Crumbl cookies:
Instructions:
- Cool the Cookies: Allow your freshly baked Muddy Buddy cookies to cool completely on a wire rack. This is essential to prevent condensation and maintain the cookie’s texture. It’s also important that the ganache on top has started to firm up at room temperature before putting in the freezer.
- Prepare for Freezing: You have a couple of options for freezing:
- Individually: If you prefer to have the flexibility to grab just a few cookies at a time, you can freeze them individually. To do this, place the cooled cookies in a single layer on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure they are not touching. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 1-2 hours or until the cookies are frozen solid.
- In Stacks: If you want to freeze larger batches together, you can stack them. Place sheets of parchment paper between the cookies to prevent sticking. Then, stack the cookies in a freezer-safe airtight container, using parchment paper between the layers. Ensure the container is sealed tightly to prevent freezer burn.
- Label and Date: It’s a good practice to label the container with the type of cookies (“Muddy Buddy Crumble Dairy Free”) and the date of freezing. This helps you keep track of their freshness.
- Freeze: Place the airtight container or the individually frozen cookies in the freezer. Make sure they are stored in a part of the freezer where they won’t be crushed or damaged.
- Thaw and Enjoy: When you’re ready to enjoy your Muddy Buddy cookies, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on their size and how frozen they are. You can also warm them up in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes if you prefer them warm.
By following these steps, you can freeze your Muddy Buddy cookies without compromising their flavor and texture. They’ll be ready to enjoy whenever you have a craving for these delicious treats.
Muddy Buddy Dairy Free Crumbl Cookie Recipe
Muddy Buddy Crumbl Cookies Copycat Recipe (Dairy Free)
Make your own dairy-free Crumbl Cookies at home with our Muddy Buddy recipe. Irresistibly delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 egg
For the Ganache
- 8 oz. dairy free chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup dairy free heavy cream or full fat coconut milk
Topping
- 1 recipe Muddy Buddies, prepared (see notes)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375ºF.
- Mix together the peanut butter, granulated sugar, and egg until dough forms.
- Use an ice cream scoop to measure out the cookie dough by 1/4 cup scoops onto an ungreased baking sheet. The dough is very soft, so I highly recommend using an easy release scoop.
- Use the bottom of a tablespoon to press a deep, wide well in each cookie dough ball. Set the tablespoon aside to use again after baking.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
- Re-press the tablespoon into each cookie IMMEDIATELY after removing from the oven. Create a defined "bowl" in each cookie for the ganache.
- Make the ganache while the cookies cool: Either in the microwave or over the stove top, heat the heavy cream. It should be steaming, but you don't need to bring it to a boil (avoid scalding or curdling).
- Add the chocolate chips to the hot cream (if using a stove to heat the cream, remove the pot from the heat first). Let sit for a few minutes to allow the chocolate chips to soften thoroughly.
- Stir until smooth and shiny.
- Spoon ganache into the completely cooled peanut butter cookies. Top each one with a few pieces of prepared Muddy Buddies.
